How important is feather quality for lei hulu  feather lei creation?

Feather quality will make all the difference in the professionalism  of the lei. We use a superior feather for  a few reasons

1. luster and wow! factor
2. less waste
3. better value

Compare the images on google from the Maui Lei Shop to other lei images. Our feathers are processed multiple times to achieve the best quality, less waste and a better product. I would rather throw a few handfuls of feathers away than half the bag. When purchasing loose rather than strung feathers these loose feathers have often been picked over and are not what we are looking for.

Wow! Factor is my standard of quality. In goose coquille I am looking for a squarish feather that is not worn, ripped, eyelashy or narrow - the bigger smoother and wider is preferred. Small feathers takes double the effort and are often weak and pointed.

It is just a soimple fact - you pay for what you get. Buy the best and expect the best results.

Classes with Kaliko Kaleohano ribbon lei are Saturdays 1 pm, reservations are recommended.  The availability of ribbon in the lei industry is creating waves - its fun, interesting, addicting and the best part is always having lei on hand for visitors and occasions.

Many collectors of Native Hawaiiana Art and folks (Hawaiians at heart) who just love all that is Hawaiian - realize at some point that our Native artwork is not simply an order that is hung on a wall. Or a trophy to be placed on your favorite papale.

Hawaiian Lei Hulu art is collectible, very valuable and a great investment. Ounce for ounce feather art can be compared to the cost of fine gems. However, the value is not only the beauty but the deeper meaning of perpetuation of Aloha. 

The Feather Artist is very careful in crafting the custom lei hulu. Not only color and texture, but the time spent on the preparation and construction of the custom lei hulu. As I tell every student - choosing the right feather is like choosing your friends... The right feather will fit in and become part of the lei, the right friend becomes part of the ohana. The wrong feather will not lie correctly, it will stand out and not flow with the lei, it may even fall out, the right feather feather will blend and enhance the lei.

Classes are mixed beginners and advanced feather lei artist as well as visitors. This months lei is Awikiwiki, an endangered Hawaiian plant. The leaves are used to make a tea for itchiness and flowers collected and strung in the maunaloa style also known as vanda orchid style. This lei is a unique one of a kind designed by AUnty Pattie Hanna (Gomez) - please register early as this feather lei class is almost sold out, this is a challenging feather lei but achievable.

This soft lightweight  hite lehua lei hulu a tribute to the lehua (ohia) on the Big Island of Hawaii that is in trouble with a new disease/pest.   Wonderful as a wedding lei and affordable at $55 each. These white lehua lei hulu (feather lei) can be bought in bulk with a few days notice for a large graduation party, retirement party and these lei hulu are available in white, ilima orange, red, pink and yellow.

 

 This beautiful pheasant lei hulu is done in both poepoe and kamoe style of tying on handmade banana fiber or coconut sennet from Tahiti. The pheasant are from Maui and are a sustainable resource for meat as well as feathers. I call this lei Poha to represent the wild fields of poha that grow on Haleakala, the poha berry is a major source of food for the pheasant we hunt.  

     Pheasant Hearts tied on to either coconut sennet or other natural fibre  - in the effort to encourage and create a market of natural cordage we have given up yarn and satin on natural feather lei hulu. Natural feather are fresh from the pelt not dyed nor processed. Using natural pelts also supports the lifestyle of hunting and gathering. A favorite past time of Aunty Pattie #auntypattie , her family and her hamana.

The unorthodox use of seeds and shells to create one of a kind seed lei necklace, seed earrings, seed and shell bracelets with quality closures on fine reinforced wire. These small changes make a huge difference in Kaliko design. The have a nice flow, are flexible yet strong and very classy.

As gatherers from 5 generations - we not only harvest food, responsibly harvest seamolusks nerites as a food source and repurpose the shells. We, as native either grow or maintain our seed supply and only harvest what is needed at the time of harvest.
