Mana and  Feather Lei

The creation of a feather lei has many steps and many many hours. When an Artist devotes that much time to the lei, it is believed to carry the mana (essence of the creator) of the Artist. An experienced lei artist spends an average 1- 2 hours per inch, lei range from 14 inches to 30+. There is also prep time of 4-6 hours in sorting and sizing each feather.

Believe and have faith that the lei will carry "something - anything - a part of the artist"  . SO if that is the belief than the Lei Artist must look forward to working on the lei. The Lei Artist must feel physically and mentally prepared to devote the time the lei requires. If the lei artist just had a fight with boss/husband (etc) this not the correct time to continue the lei. If the dog just died, this is not the correct time to continue the lei. (it has nothing to do with voodoo or weird stuff like that, the Hawaiian artists will NOT work on their chosen art in time of sickness, anger, strife, it is part of the teaching).
